Design hiring is a portfolio-first game, but the résumé still does the first filter — typically 6-10 seconds where a recruiter or design manager scans for stack, scope, and outcomes before opening the portfolio link. The Harvard format suits product designers well: it forces compression of years of work into the moments that signal seniority.
What recruiters look for
- Portfolio link above the fold (under the contact line)
- Specific tools (Figma, Framer, Origami, ProtoPie, Webflow)
- Design system contributions named (component count, adoption)
- Outcomes from research (NPS lifts, task-completion deltas, churn drops)
- Cross-functional credibility (shipped with eng, partnered with PM/data)

- Tools: 5-8 you actually use weekly, not the entire toolbox
- Methods: design systems, design tokens, ResearchOps, accessibility (WCAG)
- Adjacent skills only if real: 'production CSS, HTML, light JS' — never 'coding'

Mistakes specific to this role
- Putting a 'design philosophy' paragraph at the top. Save it for the portfolio about-page.
- Listing every Adobe app. List 3-5 tools you'd be tested on in interview.
- Vague 'led design' bullets without quantified outcomes. Even qualitative outcomes (e.g., 'changed how the team scopes features') need a measurement.
- No portfolio link or one that 404s. The most common reason a strong designer gets rejected.
